Manu Park & Parrot Lick
A great adventure and wildlife trip using some of the best eco-lodges in the cultural zone of Manu as our home bases. Explore a wide range of eco-niches, starting from Paramo landscape of the highlands, going down to the elfin forest and cloud forest as well as lowland forest. Watch out for colorful tanagers, hummingbirds, and parrots or mammals like monkeys, capybaras, and tayras and learn about the ecology of the forest and the indigenous uses of plants. This private tour affords you the luxury of exploring the forest trails with your own party, accompanied by your naturalist guide who will share his/her knowledge of the wildlife and the history and ethnology of the region with you. This trip also includes a visit of a parrot lick where you may observe flocks of parrots taking up mineral-rich clay that aids their digestion. 5 days/4 nights private tour from US $ 1,265.-
Day 1
We leave Cusco very early and journey through lonely highland scenery and isolated Quechua communities to the pass of Acjanaco, entry point of Manu National Park. After stretching our legs and looking at the typical paramo flora we begin our descent into the cloud forest, enjoying marvelous sceneries on the way. On the way, we look out for typical birds like colorful tanagers, Jaybirds, toucanets and Guans, and exotic butterflies. In the afternoon we reach our lodge in the cloud forest where we will spend the night. Full board.
Day 2
We get up before dawn and walk to a nearby Lek where we can observe the male Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, the national bird of Peru, displaying for the females. After the spectacle is over we walk back to the Lodge where a hearty breakfast awaits us, looking out for other birds like the torrent ducks, Highland motmots, and quetzals on the way. We continue our journey down to the lowland forest, visiting a coca plantation on the way. In Atalaya, the first navigable port of the Upper Madre de Dios River, we board our motorized dugout canoe which will take us to our Lodge across the river at a former tea plantation converted into a private wildlife reserve. Full board.
Day 3
We rise early to enjoy the gardens of the Lodge coming alive with first light. You may see colorful parrots, macaws, araçaris, woodpeckers, tanagers, caciques, and oropendolas as well as hummingbirds. After an early breakfast, our guide will take us on one of the Lodge trails to explore the area in both primary and secondary rainforest. There are more than five hundred different species of birds, several species of monkeys and numerous species of butterflies, amphibians, and reptiles. With a little luck, you may also observe otters and caimans at an oxbow lake nearby. Full board.
Day 4
Today a short boat ride will take us to a nearby parrot clay lick. Be prepared for an amazing birding spectacle! After breakfast, we return to our Lodge in the Cloud Forest. In the afternoon, your guide will invite you for another observation walk. Of course, you may also just relax observing wildlife from the terrace of the lodge or the watchtower, or you may have a refreshing bath in the San Pedro River. After dinner, we may search the Lodge gardens for exotic insects and amphibians. Full board.
Day 5
Enjoy our last morning in the forest watching hummingbirds from the tower with a freshly brewed cup of coffee. Try to find all the orchids in bloom around the Lodge or you may watch over the San Pedro River and hope for torrent ducks to pass by or perhaps the rare sunbittern. We leave late morning for our return journey to Cusco. B & L
